![]() ![]() So those are the two things I was thinking about as I watched the mass exodus in the theater that afternoon. Mainly: that sex and violence are found together as often as peanut butter and jelly, and that the entire planet is conspiring to keep girls down. Punk girls know some things about sex and violence. It was subsequently banned in France for almost 30 years. A bunch-meaning there were only a half dozen people left in a theater of about 30. I don’t remember much about Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi’s Baise-Moi (usually translated as Fuck Me or sometimes Rape Me), except that a bunch of people walked out of it. Nobody ever walked out of these movies, except to pee and then hurry back. This effort was often wildly against the mainstream blockbusters I’d grown up watching.Īmong the gems I discovered that year: Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming’s The Anniversary Party, Terry Zwigoff’s Ghostworld, David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Charles Herman-Wurmfeld’s Kissing Jessica Stein¸ and Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko. ![]() Every Saturday afternoon, I’d plunk down a couple of bucks for the matinee showing and get myself a film education that was without any greater context than “here’s what’s playing this weekend”. There was a small three-screen movie theater nearby that ran all the hot indies. ![]() In the summer of 2001, I was 19-years-old and exploring independent cinema for the first time. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s almost as if the reader is capturing this story with a camera or video recorder as it unfolds. In this story, his illustrations are often close-ups of the action from different view points, including slanted, below, above, and right in the thick of things. Van Allsburg has proven once again his ability to realistically master the clothing and environments of the characters in the time periods for which he writes. The careful artistry of the illustrations in Probuditi assist in the development of setting and characterization in the story. The ending is wrapped up in a traditional Van Allsburg understated way that leaves readers with an “ah ha” and a smile. A majority of the solid plot and realistic character development is revealed through the dialog. The main character, Calvin, takes every opportunity to trick his little sister, Tanya, until she is presented with an opportunity for revenge which she effectively takes full advantage of. Everyone loves a story depicting the triumph of the underdog and that is exactly what is delivered to readers in Probuditi! by Chris Van Allsburg. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ryen has become the quintessential mean girl in an effort to fit in and survive her high school years. Instead of just one rude, alpha MC, we start with two! Its a deal we didn’t know we were buying. Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. ![]() It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter.
