The ending, when Layken recited her slam, and she runs off thinking Will wasn’t even there, and then realizes he was there, and recited his slam to her, hit me in the feels. I was prepared to be emotionally distraught. I knew that when Layken was saying how her mom was coughing and sounded sick in like the first fifty pages. What I discovered? Layken’s mother Julia (that’s such a cool name) had cancer. The fact that his parents died and he was left with the stress of raising a child, I just couldn’t handle it.įor the first time in my life, I detected foreshadowing and actually knew something was going to happen before it actually happened. Reading Will’s words through verse made me tear up. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that Hoover incorporated poetry slams into her writing. I could not believe that Will was her teacher! It was so unexpected that I had to put the book down and just reevaluate what I had read so far. That metaphor would be referring to Will, Layken’s teacher. Let’s talk about the first major plot twist that I did NOT expect from a YA Novel. THIS BOOK, OH MY GOODNESS! I was hooked from the first chapter! It was so compelling and emotional and relatable.
